moving on to etchings 6

Here I wanted to try out a new image as well as a different technique for making the marks.

Moving on to etchings 1

I decided that for this particular project I need to work in etching, so I have been playing with a variety of ways to make marks ( based on the same image- which won’t be part of the final piece) to work out how I should develop the idea. This etching was made using a soft ground.

Thinking through making 1

I don’t know how other people work when they have a more ‘serious’ project to do- but for me I ‘think’ about the idea and what I want to represent through the process of making. Generally I do this by selecting an image which is related to the theme I’m working on and make plates, often I only take a single print from each as it’s about the mark I’m making.

I know it won’t  be the image I intend to use as the image for the final piece, but it is good enough to be going on with for use on small steel ( ie cheap) plates while I decide more clearly what the correct image I want to use might be. I think this process driven method of working is clearly seen by the next plates I’m showing here.

I started out with monoprints as usual. there is something in making the work that enables me to work out what aspect of the subject matters to me. What I respond to in the monoprints which are essentially sketch book pieces.

Wine based prints

In retrospect I think that these prints would have been far better had I used shades of  red.

Tea themed prints 2

Another shape to work with. I was a bit annoyed with myself for not getting the cup on straight.

Tea themed prints

This is just a starting point as I wanted to work with ghost images from the plate.

Some new ideas

A page from my sketch book ( plus cat paw prints) where I was working out shapes for new monoprints.
